Western Colorado’s only summer Peace Officer's Standards and Training gets ready to welcome new cadets into the program
After the launch of the summer academy in May 2022, first-year Western Colorado Law Enforcement (WCLEA) graduates have successfully completed the program and are now serving their communities while the academy gears up to welcome a new cohort.
While other regional academies are offered in fall and spring, the WCLEA academy is unique in that it’s the only summer session being offered in western Colorado. This provides yet another opportunity for those looking to go into the field of service.
"In 16 weeks, students get hands-on, real-world experience to build the foundation for a future career in law enforcement. Outside the formal classroom setting, they develop camaraderie while learning the importance of teamwork, professionalism, leadership, and partnerships in the community," said Montrose Police Sergeant and WCLEA Director Courtney Jones.
Jones said she’s looking forward to meeting the next generation of peace officers and encourages anyone interested to apply.
Officer Dante Bertorello was hired by the Montrose Police Department seven months ago and said it’s been not only an incredible advancement in his career but he’s made connections that’ll last a lifetime.
“We grow from being acquaintances not knowing each other to becoming friends, and then towards the end of the academy you grow into that brotherhood. You’re all there supporting one another, cheering each other on,” said Officer Bertorello.
His plan is to work his way up in the MPD to detective, and eventually wants to work for a big three letter agency— think Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
His advice for future cadets: Be more than the officer you strive to be.
The application deadline is March 14 and classes begin May 22. To be selected, candidates must be 21 or older by the time they graduate.
