Colorado Mesa University's Department of Theatre Arts will wrap up its 2022-23 season with William Shakespeare's perennial favorite, A Midsummer Night's Dream. The play will run from April 13 through 22 in the Moss Performing Arts Center Robinson Theatre.
One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a timeless story that blends reality and fantasy. Two young couples are all in love, but with the wrong people. They chase each other into a fantasy world — a forest filled with fairies, love potions and trickery where the magical beings that live there manipulate the humans and use them as pawns in their own love games. Subplots include a crew of workers hilariously cobbling together a show out of sheer passion, and the majesty of a royal wedding.
The play is directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Arts Ben Reigel and includes a large cast of theatre majors including Cate Castelli as Puck, Brendan Lowry as Demetrius, CW Hellen as Oberon and McKenna Hiler as Titania. Lowry was most recently seen in the title role of Floyd Collins and Hiler as Patrick Star in The SpongeBob Musical.
Costuming for A Midsummer Night's Dream will be a team effort with faculty designer Jill Van Brussel being joined by two advanced technical theatre majors to bring to life the fantastical and realistic aspects of the show. Senior L. Knight will design all of the costumes for the realm of the fairies, Rachel Foote the workers (sometimes called the mechanicals), and Van Brussel will be designing the costumes for the royals and the couples. She will also have the task of making sure all the costumes for the disparate worlds of the play come together in a cohesive whole
